Nectarine Trees (Prunus persica var. nucipersica) PREORDER
Estimated arrival date: January 2027
Wholesale grower: Dave Wilson Nursery
General description
Nectarines can produce exceptionally well in Arizona when you choose low-chill varieties and give young trees protection from harsh summer sun. They prefer well-drained soil, deep watering cycles, and a good layer of mulch to moderate heat. In the low desert, they thrive with morning sun + afternoon shade during their first few years; at higher elevations they tolerate full sun and benefit from stronger winter chill. Nectarines fruit on one-year wood, so light summer pruning and winter shaping keep yields high and trees manageable.
Variety descriptions
Desert Delight – Very low-chill, early-season variety ideal for mild winters. Produces sweet, firm fruit even in Phoenix heat. Best AZ zones: 8–10.
Panamint – Excellent flavor, moderate vigor, and reliable production in warm climates. Slightly higher chill than Desert Delight but still low-desert friendly. Best AZ zones: 8–10 (7 with protection).
Arctic Star – Premium white nectarine with ultra-sweet, low-acid flavor; performs well in desert climates with consistent moisture and summer bark protection. Best AZ zones: 8–10 (7 borderline).
Mericrest – One of the best cold-hardy nectarines available; rich, aromatic flavor and reliable production in colder climates with strong winter chill. Best AZ zones: 5–8.
Harko – Extremely cold-hardy, late-blooming nectarine ideal for northern Arizona; produces high-quality fruit even after cold winters. Best AZ zones: 5–8.
Goldmine – Cold-hardy white nectarine with excellent flavor and late-season ripening; strong performer in mountain and high-desert regions. Best AZ zones: 5–8.
