Preparing your order…

The best yards begin with the soil

Compacted desert dirt will not grow much on its own. It is alkaline, salty, low in organic matter and often sealed under caliche, so water runs off and roots stall. A delivery of living soil, compost and mulch is the fastest way to change that, whether you hire the work out or do it yourself.

Growers Best Organics makes it in Arizona from compost, pumice and worm castings, and brings it in bulk. One truck covers most of southern Arizona.

From this to this

Barren, eroded ground on one side. On the other, what the same ground does once the soil is alive.

  • If your land looks like this

Barren, eroded, devoid of visible life.
  • And you want something like this

    Rich, green, full of life.

Choose the product that fits the job

Four kinds of product. The calculator says how much of each.

  • Living soil

    Start here

A finished blend that is alive the day it lands. For new beds, basins and planting holes, and for raised beds that need filling.

  • Compost

    Feed what is there

Finished compost to spread over beds and around trees, or to till into dirt that has never grown anything.

  • Mulch

    Cover it

Pine mulch to lay over the soil as soon as it is amended. It keeps the moisture in and the sun off, and feeds the ground as it breaks down.

  • Pumice

    Open it up

Black volcanic pumice to loosen heavy clay and caliche so roots and water can get through.

What to expect

From the order to the first thing growing.

  • A call from the driverOnce the order is in, the driver calls to set a day and a spot for the pile.
  • A clean dropThe load goes where you point, on a driveway or a tarp, with the truck kept off the lawn.
  • Soil that is aliveMade in Arizona at an organics and worm farm, not bagged dirt from a distribution center.
  • The right amountThe calculator on this page sizes the load from your measurements and rounds up so you do not run short.
  • Something growingAmend, cover and plant, and within a season the ground starts to hold water and feed itself.

Questions people ask

Who makes this and who delivers it?

Growers Best Organics. They are an Arizona organics and worm farm we partner with: they make the soil, the compost and the mulch, and their truck brings it. We sell it here because it is the soil we would want under the yards we design.

Where do you deliver?

Most of southern Arizona: the Phoenix Valley, Tucson and east toward the New Mexico line. Delivery is priced by the cubic yard and the distance, and the checkout shows the delivered price before you pay.

How much do I need?

Open the calculator under the products. Type the length and width of each area, or trace them on the satellite map, pick a depth, and it tells you the load to order. It adds a little for settling and rounds up to the half yard.

What happens after I pay?

The driver calls you to schedule. Tell them where the pile should go. A driveway or a tarp on hard ground is easiest to work from.

Can I get a smaller amount?

Yes. The smallest delivery is half a cubic yard. If you are ordering fruit trees, you can add 5-gallon buckets at tree checkout and pick them up with the trees.

Why living soil instead of bagged soil?

Compacted desert dirt will not grow much on its own. Living soil carries the biology, the organic matter and the air space that bagged mixes lose on a shelf, so the ground starts working the day it goes down.
