Before you plant

These conditions determine whether it will thrive.

Soil chemistry

Needs acidic soil, roughly pH 5 to 6.5. In Phoenix that means a raised bed or large container of acidic potting mix, regular soil sulfur and, ideally, rainwater or filtered water, since tap water is alkaline and salty.

Required microclimatePlacement is part of the growing system.

Container on a shaded patio, brought indoors or covered when nights drop below 40°F.

Cold hardinessCover on every frost night

UF/IFAS says established plants get hurt in the low 30s and young ones shouldn't see anything below about 45°F. In Phoenix keep it in a pot and bring it in or under cover any night forecast in the 30s.

Leaves and wood: damaged below 32°F
Heat toleranceNeeds afternoon shade

A humid West African understory shrub, so Phoenix's dry 110°F+ summers are rough on it. Local growers keep it on a shaded patio in summer, never in west sun, and it also needs acidic soil and low-salt water, which our tap water isn't.

Right plant, right place

Will Miracle fruit grow at your Arizona property?

Sun exposure

Bright filtered light or morning sun only.

How to use it

Chew a berry, then taste lemons, vinegar or sour fruit; they taste sweet for a while.
