Blueberries
These conditions determine whether it will thrive.
Dave Wilson calls Sunshine Blue very cold hardy, so Phoenix winters are no threat. No variety blossom-frost figure was found. It blooms in spring, and a rare late frost could hit open flowers.
Blueberries struggle in desert heat and alkaline soil. Grow Sunshine Blue in a container or raised bed with acidic mix, and keep it out of afternoon sun. Fruit ripens in late spring before peak heat.

Sunshine Blue
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Sunshine Blue'A relatively heat-tolerant Southern highbush selection, but heat tolerance does not cancel its chemistry. It still requires pH 4.5–5.5, low-salt media, consistent moisture, and afternoon shade in Phoenix or Tucson.
How to help Blueberries thrive
- 1
Start with a large container or isolated raised bed; do not attempt to turn a pocket of calcareous Phoenix soil into a permanent blueberry bed.
- 2
Use an acidic blueberry medium and verify pH 4.5–5.5 before planting, then retest the root zone and irrigation water through the year.
- 3
Provide morning sun, full afternoon shade, and insulation or outer-pot shading that prevents the root ball from overheating.
- 4
Irrigate with rainwater or low-alkalinity filtered water whenever possible and keep moisture even without creating a stagnant, saturated pot.
- 5
Feed lightly with an acid-forming fertilizer intended for blueberries; watch new leaves for interveinal yellowing that signals high-pH iron lockout.
